CARNOUSTIE 26 V ALLOA 3
Carnoustie entertained mid table Alloa, the overhead conditions were excellent but a high wind which was to prove troublesome. With a pitch that was firm and dry Carnoustie kicked off and Alloa let the ball bounce allowing Dean Nicholson to gain possession and go to ground, the ball was recycled and chipped with Alloa gathering but being turned over only for Carnoustie to knock on. From the scrum Alloa kicked out on the full, but Carnoustie wasted the opportunity by making a squint throw to the line. Alloa won the scrum and kicked for position but from a further scrum they were driven back but were given the put in at another scrum from which they kicked. Carnoustie rear guard allowed the ball to bounce and were then under severe pressure and compounded the situation by going offside. Alloa opted for a scrum but made little headway and then threw squint to a line out. Carnoustie were living dangerously and the relieving kick was fielded by Alloa who scored from the penalty which was conceded. The restart was again allowed to bounce and found touch. Carnoustie won the line out with Graham Hay running strongly at the defence, handed off several would be tacklers and when eventually tackled fed to supporting Owen Hughes who touched down virtually untouched, the conversion was not added. Again the restart was allowed to bounce, subsequently gathered but then passed forward. Alloa, from the scrum putting the ball through the hands but with no penetration were forced to touch on the far side. From scrum ball Carnoustie cleared only for Alloa to again press forward and attempt a drop goal which allowed Carnoustie to touch down but the drop out went out on the full. From the scrum Alloa attacked wide but Bruce Langlands read the situation well and intercepted a pass and fed winger Dean Nicholson who ran and chipped finding touch at half way. Alloa came back immediately chipping to the line and following up fast with the defence stretched the chaser was obstructed off the ball giving the defender a ten minute rest. Alloa again opted for a scrum but were held up and then gained a further penalty for failure to release. A scrum was again taken but the ball went loose for Steven Esposito to field and run clear, when stopped the half was brought to an end.
Alloa restarted and Stewart Millar fielded cleanly for Grant Langlands to clear upfield. Alloa were now under pressure and conceded a penalty which was missed but Carnoustie maintained field position and from a line out on the twenty two sent the ball quickly wide allowing Graham Hay to collect at pace and power over with the conversion added. Alloa were clearly being troubled by the breeze in the way that the homesters had in the first half. Owen Hughes fielded the restart cleanly and Alloa were penalised. From his own half Grant Langlands found touch in goal bringing the teams back for a scrum at the point of kick. Alloa failed to take advantage and when the ball went to ground Steven Esposito gathered the forwards drove over with the ball going wide securing an attacking position. Ally Macdonald then ran strongly down the wing before being forced to touch. From the line out the ball was chipped but the Alloa full back had time to make a mark. Alloa were now tiring and with squint line out throwing and kicks on the full allowed Carnoustie to maintain an attacking position and when a drive was set up and the ball recycled quickly to the backs Graham Hay again found a way to the line with the conversion added. Alloa continued to concede penalties with a drive being brought to ground and then failure to release the ball on the ground. The ball was tapped and driven, recycled, driven again, recycled and fed to the backs for Grant Langlands to step inside and drive through a ruck of players to touch down with full points added. Arron Ringcell fielded the restart and the ball was played upfield where Carnoustie ensured there was no break out by the visitors until the game was brought to an end.
Carnoustie clearly played the conditions better, defended more strongly and attacked with more strength and precision.
