P6 & P7
Carnoustie 6/7’s headed to Mayfield, the home of Dundee Eagles, to take part in their first tournament of the season. Although the team had won their last two games convincingly, they were slightly apprehensive going into the tournament as they were playing against some of the biggest and best mini rugby teams in the North East of Scotland. The squad consisted of Matthew Nicoll, Matthew Cruickshank, Michael Jamieson, Ross Burr, Ross Milne, Nathan Dewar, James MacCallum, James Lockhart, Niamh Feighan, Ruaridh Blackmore, Cameron Sanger and Kerr MacKenzie.
Carnoustie got off to a flying start with a convincing 2 -0 win against Ellon. Although the conditions were very poor with a constant drizzle the handling of the Carnoustie team was slick and accurate. Matthew Cruickshank opened the scoring and Kerr MacKenzie added the second.
Carnoustie then drew their next two against Aberdeen Grammar and Dundee Eagles. In the first game it was 2-2 and against the home side, Dundee Eagles, it was 1-1. In both games Carnoustie scored first and they were very unlucky not to win both games. In the 4th game of the tournament Carnoustie lost concentration and eventually lost 3-1 against a large, well organised Perthshire outfit.
In the final game of the tournament, Carnoustie faced local rivals Strathmore. Their heads were up again and the team spent most of the time in the Strathmore half. They just could not however cross the line and the game ended in a 0 – 0 draw. Credit must be given to the Strathmore team who defended bravely for the majority of the match.
This was a fantastic team effort and although they did not win any silverware, Carnoustie only lost the one game, the same as the eventual winners, Aberdeen Grammar. It most also be noted that all the other teams put out primary 7 teams whilst Carnoustie and Strathmore, due to lack of numbers, put out their normal combined p6/7 teams. Well done indeed to these primary 6 players who did not look out of place at all, playing against older boys. Carnoustie’s next match is against local rivals, Arbroath, on the 17th of October.
